a new house

i finally wrapped up a new house i’d been working on, after a slight texture disaster. all i’m going to say is if you’re zoomed in changing texture repeats, make sure you know what’s selected before applying the change!

it’s a rustic home, 30m x 30m, with 60 prims. i’m using some new textures in this, including some wood slat and bricks. and it has a color change script, which brightens up the trim and front door.

new teleporters coming

i’m about to set out new teleporters for getting around to the different rezzers at the park life / ace’s spaces store.

we have six rezzer platforms currently. two more are planned for a total of eight, but first i’m going to replace the current colored-column teleporters with a new system.

the new design will be an array of buttons with numbers on the faces, and a message above the prims showing how many people are browsing at that location. this will let you know which ones are empty, or the least populated, saving you some time from not having to hop around to all of them. and you still just simply click once on the teleporter to zip yourself off to another platform. we do have scanners at each platform now, but we are not collecting your name or invading privacy. they’re simply adding up numbers of everyone hanging out there.

we will be doing what we can to balance out the lines for the rezzers, and make it as easy as possible to get to look at houses, with minimal interruption. we know it can get hectic, and people can be inconsiderate sometimes. please send us your feedback on the shopping experience, the new teleporters, or anything else on your mind.

garages, and maybe other accessory builds

i’m working on some garage designs that compliment my houses. they’re just some simple storage spaces for cars, between 7 and 15 prims. for prim-savings, the car area for each one is 10×10. i parked a little nissan sentra, along side my huge cadillac, and both fit nicely. i can’t guarantee your jet turbine-laden batmobile will fit but most sl cars should.

along with those new “accessory” builds, there has been a free beach deck available. and i plan on making more of these little builds that go with houses. if you have any ideas i’d love to hear ‘em

looking for testers for new button feature

i’m wrapping up a new version of the park life house script, which has a bunch of little things done to it, and one main new feature: the ability to use buttons to access the menu. this means you just click a button instead of typing “/99 menu” to bring up the house menu.

slexchange sales working again

if you tried to buy anything from park life on slexchange.com recently, it probably failed to deliver. i had to gut my magic box and put new scripts in for it to work, but it’s fixed now!

usability tip #1: name your teleporters and signs

second life, the fickle being that it is, often decides the textures we’re looking for aren’t the ones it needs to download. when you arrive at a store, looking desperately for the hat department, you just know the sign or teleporter will be the last texture to load. but if it was named “teleport to hats” or “hat dept. sign” you could hold your mouse over it and know where to start walking.

my five points

ace and i each sell our houses under our own brand names, but we do so alongside each other, and often work together trading ideas. so we have this “umbrella” brand which covers us both: five points.

this is a reference to le corbusier’s les 5 points d’ une architecture nouvelle, or 5 points of new architecture. these points were a system of features which were his vision of architecture for the future: the foundation lifted off the ground, floating walls in a flexible, open space, a floating facade, a long, horizontal front window, and a rooftop garden.

while i’m influenced by his work and like to incorporate these concepts into my own, i don’t adhere to them as rules, nor find that they can always apply to my current project.

reading a 37signals blog post about focusing on the permanent features got me thinking about my own features central to my business. and there just happen to be five of them

so here are park life’s five points:
